Application of Bearings in Hydraulic Cylinders


Bearings play a crucial role in hydraulic cylinders, primarily by guiding and supporting the piston rod to ensure smooth, stable, and precise linear motion under high loads. They are typically installed in the cylinder head or gland, where they help maintain rod alignment, minimize friction, and absorb radial forces.


In this demanding application, bearings must endure heavy loads, continuous oscillation, shock vibrations, and potential exposure to contaminants and moisture. Their performance is vital for preventing rod buckling, reducing seal wear, and enhancing the overall efficiency and service life of the cylinder.


To meet these challenges, hydraulic cylinders commonly utilize plain bearings (bushings) made from durable, low-friction materials such as bronze, composite polymers, or lubricant-impregnated sintered metals. These materials offer excellent wear resistance and self-lubricating properties. For applications requiring higher precision and load capacity, needle roller bearings are also employed. Advanced sealing integration is often used to protect the bearing interface from debris, ensuring reliable, maintenance-free operation in construction, industrial, and agricultural machinery.
